In the 1860 slave schedule for Cumberland County, David McDuffie, a brick mason, owned 5 slaves, 4 females and 1 male. The ages and other characteristics listed in the schedule are below. It would be interesting to learn more about these voiceless and very vulnerable women in a white man’s world… Who fathered the young children? Where were they living, and were they still a family unit, once freedom came?
