According to the inscription on the stool, it belonged to “J.T.R.” of the 20th Indiana. Regiment. A quick review of the regiment’s roster shows that the 20th Indiana mustered into service in July 1861 and subsequently served in every major campaign, including battles at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Appomattox. The unit also participated in the expeditions to Hatteras in September 1861 and the action at Chicamacomico in October 1861. John T. Richardson was a 1st Lieutenant in Company K of the 20th Regiment.
