January 14th
Very dark and cloudy still. We have had no pleasant weather since the sleet mentioned above [January 7]. Brother, his wife, Estell, and Ella came from Petersburg yesterday.
I have just got through having my sausage meat put away in cases; not a pleasant job, but I prefer to attend to it myself, because then I am sure it is nicely done, and because it is my duty as a housekeeper.
