Friday 13th [May 1864]
We heard this week that Gen. Jenkins is killed & Gen. Longstreet wounded. It was done by our own men, the same (Mahoney’s) brigade that killed Stonewall Jackson. I fear there is some one in that brigade that is not all right. I finished my dress today. It fits very neatly. Mr. Henry went to Wiley Knight’s this evening. I went up the meadow a piece to see Heff’s calf but not find it. I came back by myself. We have a good many young chickens but they are dying a good deal with gapes & the hawk takes one nearly every day. It wearys me a good deal to see the old hawk take them off & they crying so pitifully.
