Under the caption of “Specimens of Gubernatorial Literature,” the Standard quotes the following as having been uttered by Gov. Vance, while in Virginia:
“Boys, if you want peace you must go to the heart of Pennsylvania, and there fight till hell freezes over as hard as a lightwood knot.”
“Boys, when you whip Grant I will send each of you a bottle of whiskey, with enough sugar to sweeten it.”
“Boys, you must fight till you fill hell so full of Yankees that their feet will stick out of the windows.”
We understand from gentlemen who heard every speech the Governor made to the soldiers in Virginia, that he used no such language as ascribed to him by the Standard – and that the above is a total perversion of what the Governor did say –
